Vipul Khurana has been at it for 12 years now. “Dancing has always been a pastime, so it was natural that I gravitated towards the turntables,” he said. DJ Vee, as he is better known, doesn’t identify with a single genre or style. “My biggest influence has been DJ Vishal of Mumbai, whom I learned from,” he said. “As a DJ, I’m all about the rhythm”. Every Friday at The Beach, DJ Vee spins up a mix of Hollywood and Bollywood staples. “It wasn’t easy for people to find both kinds of music on the dance floor. So we started alternating between Hollywood and Bollywood music for small chunks of time, usually about 30 minutes,” he explained. “These nights are huge draws. I like giving the crowd what they want – essentially, fast dance music. I tend to keep my samples short and crisp. I rarely let a verse run its course.” This Friday, DJ Vee will play a set that includes his standard repertoire of crowd-pleasers, but there’s an addition: he has percussionist Jayant on drums and dhol, who will add a dandiya flavor to the evening.
