Once Upon A Time In Mumbai
Soundtrack, T-Series, Rs 160
Rating : **
Although the film is set in 1970s Mumbai, the songs have only a subtle influence of the Hindi film music of the time. There is the token roar of RD Burman at the start of “Parda” followed by Sunidhi Chauhan’s rendition of the first two verses of “Duniya Mein Logon Ko” from 1972’s Apna Desh. A popular genre from that era is the qawwali and it makes an appearance on “Pee Loon” and “Tum Jo Aaye.” Both are infused with the typical clap-clap rhythm of the dholak and the trademark voices of the Sabri Brothers as well as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The remaining tracks seem too modern for this period movie. Perhaps music director Pritam didn’t want the music to sound dated or too much like Om Shanti Om redux. Be that as it may, three versions of one song, “I Am In Love,” are inexcusable. Aditya Kundalkar
