28 March 2009 Bangalore Dance Collective |
Abhilash Ningappa recently finished his post-graduation in choreography from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, Austria. Back in Bangalore, he met up with friends and dancers training at the Attakkalari Center for Movement Arts and decided to start the Bangalore Dance Collective. Their first piece as a collective is titled “New Trash”. According to him, the choreography of this piece stemmed out of a single question – when the body moves, what does it want to say? According to Ningappa, this question was answered “using the favourite objects of the dancers like movies, songs and objects”. Ningappa asked the other dancers to bring in their favourite things and worked on the personal stories that made these objects special to the dancers. “Once we had these stories we began to work on translating them into movements by structuring the essence of the performance and then deconstructing them into abstractions,” he said. “The piece is an attempt to come up with a unique language that transcends both text and movement and contains both of them. What a piece eventually has to be is a performance where the body talks and the lips dance.” venue 7:00PM |
